Introduction: In this three-hour workshop, we explore why raised bed gardening is an increasingly popular way to grow food by discussing the benefits of raised bed gardening, different bed styles and materials, and key considerations to make when deciding if raised garden beds are right for you. The bulk of this class is hands-on, where participants will learn some wood-working basics, from vital safety protocols to selecting lumber, measuring/marking, cutting, and assembling the wood into finished raised beds. We then move outside (weather permitting) for a step-by-step, hands-on demonstration of installing the raised bed here at BUFCO’s landscape yard.
Participants enjoy a 20% discount on all BUFCO products (custom raised beds and Specialty Beds excluded) during workshops.
Materials included: Lumber, hardware, sand paper, landscape fabric, and some Personal Protective Equipment.
Additional Details: This workshop is a mix of group discussion, hands-on learning, and question and answer. During the hands-on woodworking segment, participants are shown vital safety protocols that MUST be adhered to by all those taking part. There will be no exceptions to safety protocols. Participants will have the opportunity to use measuring tapes, battery powered drills, battery powered screw drivers (impact drivers), and a sliding mitre saw (“chop saw”) for cutting lumber. All tools and materials will be supplied by BUFCO
No previous experience with the basic use of shop tools is necessary. However, if some participants are uncomfortable with a hand-on experience there is still much to be gained by watching the processes being demonstrated.
Safety equipment (eyewear and optional ear plugs) will be provided. Shared safety equipment (eyewear) will be sterilized before being passed from one person to another. If you have your own safety goggles and ear protection, we encourage you to bring it.
All participants will be required to sign a Participant Waiver before the workshop begins.
Instructor
Marc Green (he/him) is BUFCO’s VP of Sales and Operations and has been building and designing raised garden beds and other garden infrastructure for the past fifteen years. Marc is an avid outdoors enthusiast, loves fishing, canoeing and wilderness camping. He also has a deep connection with music, spending much of his spare time playing guitar and piano.
Cagan (pronounced “Chaun”) Kolay (he/him) is BUFCO’s Lead Carpenter and a key member of our Installation Team. Cagan grew up in Turkey, spending his spare time trekking & camping along the remnants of old civilizations using historic trails such as the Lycian Way. With his degree in architecture, he moved to Toronto to explore the connection between wood and architecture, starting as a professional Woodworker. Cagan loves discovering the natural beauty of Canada, while also enjoying photography, sketching, and canoeing.
