Custom Built Trellis
Train your veggies to grow up on a trellis. Allowing your vines like squash and cucumbers to climb means less fruit rots on the ground. It makes for easier harvesting and it's a great space saving technique. We use locally harvested Poplar saplings, taken from fields that are soon to be ploughed under to make room for a subdivision. Poplar saplings makes a great trellis wood because the small trunks are nice and straight.

Soil Amendments
Vermicompost
Vermicompost or worm castings…or worm poop - will add an intense nutritional boost to the soil for your plants. It’s an excellent way to start your garden and is very useful when succession planting (putting in new plants when current plants have been harvested). We carry two types of worm castings:
![]() Gro4 Organics |
|
Does not add much volume to garden beds, good if your pots or beds are full | Adds volume to your garden beds, can be used early season to top up beds |
Is a nutritional super-boost | Is a significant nutritional boost |
Due to smaller volumes, is not a significant water retention element | Due to larger volume applied, will help more with water retention |
We apply this three or four times throughout the growing season, especially when transplanting seedlings/sowing seed | We use this when establishing a new garden bed, or early season when opening up the garden in the spring |
- Jocelyn’s Soil Booster (“JSB”) from WasteNot Farms is produced by Jocelyn Molyneux and her millions of Red Wriggler worms. Red Wrigglers are thought to be the most effective worms at creating worm castings with the highest nutritional content. We recommend at least two bags per 4’ x 8’ garden area. $20 per two-litre bag.
- Gro4 Organics vermicompost is made from earthworms that are produced for the fishing industry. Although not quite as nutritionally rich as Jocelyn’s Soil Booster, the Gro4 castings still have excellent nutritional content, is a little more economical, especially when considering price/volume. It is applied in larger amounts, which helps to build volume and structure in your garden. We recommend two bags per 4’ x 8’ garden bed. $25 per twenty-litre bag.
Better World Plant Food
We also carry Better World, a certified organic soil amendment and plant food made from dried beetle castings (so…beetle poop!) It’s $21 for a half-litre, or $30 for a one litre package. It’s a dry powder and has a very long shelf life so any left over can be used next season. It’s used in very small amounts, directly into the soil, and/or steeped as a tea to water with or spray the leaves with. Excellent for more and bigger flowers, accelerating growth rate, and for boosting plant immunity. Because it is a powder, Better World does not add volume to the garden, a great feature for over-flowing pots, garden beds, and raised beds.
Organic Straw Mulch (Fall only)
Straw is used in edible gardens in a multitude of applications, most commonly as a mulch. Straw mulch helps to retain moisture in the soil, assists in the suppression of weeds, helps to protect the soil surface from the impact of rain, nourishes the soil as it breaks down and decomposes, and reduces soil erosion. When it’s time to plant garlic (mid to end of October), straw mulch is an essential ingredient that accomplishes all of the above. Plus it makes it more difficult for critters to dig up your newly planted cloves.
